Sump Pump Not Working? Causes and Fixes for Omaha
If you just found water on the basement floor, or you can hear a storm rolling in and your sump pump is not working, you need answers fast — not a lecture. This guide walks through the reasons a sump pump quits, the fixes you can safely try yourself in the next few minutes, and the point where you should stop and call a plumber. Most failures come down to a short list of causes, and a couple of them you can fix on the spot.
Sump pumps matter more in Omaha than in a lot of the country. Our clay-heavy soil holds water, and when spring and summer storms saturate the ground, that water pushes against your foundation and rises into the pit under your basement. The pump is the one thing standing between that groundwater and your finished basement. When it fails, it usually fails at the worst possible moment — in the middle of the exact downpour it was installed to handle.
First, run the two-minute diagnosis
Before you assume the worst, check the basics in order. Nine times out of ten the problem is on this list.
Start with power. A sump pump that is silent and dead is most often unplugged, on a tripped breaker, or on a tripped GFCI outlet. Look at the cord, check your panel, and press the reset button on the outlet. Pumps draw a hard jolt of current when they kick on, and that surge is enough to trip a GFCI. If the pump roars back to life when you restore power, you found it.
Next, test the float switch. The float is the arm or bobber that rises with the water and tells the pump to turn on. It is the single most common part to fail. Reach in and lift the float by hand — carefully, and never with the pump still able to grab your fingers. If the pump fires when you lift the float but never turns on by itself, the float is stuck or worn out. Sometimes the pump has simply shifted in the pit and the float is pinned against the wall; nudging the pump back to center fixes it.

The most common reasons a sump pump stops working
A clogged or frozen discharge line
The discharge pipe carries water from the pit to the outside of your house. If it is blocked, the pump can run and run without moving anything. In summer the blockage is usually debris, dirt, or a critter that got into the pipe outlet. A stuck or failed check valve
The check valve is a one-way flap on the discharge pipe that keeps pumped water from sliding back down into the pit. When it fails, the pump lifts the water, the water falls right back, and the pump lifts it again — cycling over and over and never getting ahead. If your pump runs constantly with no real rain, a bad check valve is a prime suspect.
A clogged impeller or a dirty pit
The impeller is the small fan inside the pump that actually moves the water. Gravel, silt, and gunk from the pit can jam it. A jammed impeller often produces a hum or a whine while the motor strains but nothing comes out. This is also how motors burn out: the pump keeps trying to push against a blockage until it overheats. If your pit is full of sediment, that is both a cause and a warning.
A burned-out motor
If the pump is completely unresponsive, power is confirmed, and the float moves freely, the motor itself may be done. Motors give out from age, from running dry, or from fighting a clog for too long. The pump is simply old
Most submersible sump pumps last about seven to ten years. If yours is around that age and acting up, do not sink money into patching it. The math favors replacing a tired pump before it fails, not after.
"My sump pump is running but not pumping water"
This specific complaint is common enough to call out on its own. If the motor is clearly running but the pit is not emptying, work through three things: a clogged or frozen discharge line, a failed check valve draining water back in, and a jammed impeller. Any one of them lets the motor spin without result.
The important move here is to shut the pump off if it is running nonstop against a blockage. A motor that runs dry or fights an obstruction for long will burn out, turning a cheap fix into a full replacement. Why sump pumps fail during Omaha storms
The cruel irony of sump pumps is that they break down under exactly the conditions they exist for. There are three big reasons.
The first is power loss. Test it on a schedule. Pour a five-gallon bucket of water into the pit every couple of months, and always test in early spring before the wet season. The pump should turn on, discharge the water, and shut off cleanly. This two-minute check is the best protection you have.
Add a battery backup. A backup system — a second pump on its own battery — takes over when the power dies or the main pump fails. Expect roughly $600 to $2,000 installed depending on the system, with the batteries themselves lasting about three to seven years. Keep the pit and lines clean. Clear debris out of the pit, make sure the float moves freely, and check that the outdoor discharge point is open and pointed well away from the foundation. If water pools right back against the house, it just returns to the pit.
Watch for warning signs. Frequent cycling with no rain, constant running, grinding or rattling noises, visible rust, or any water on the floor all mean the system needs attention.
