Hard Water in Omaha: What It Does to Your Plumbing
If your glassware comes out of the dishwasher cloudy, your showerhead sprays sideways after a year, or your water heater is on its third rumble-filled winter, you are not imagining things. Hard water in Omaha is real, it is measurable, and it quietly shortens the life of the most expensive plumbing appliance in your house. What most homeowners get wrong is the scale of the problem — Omaha's water is hard, but it is not the mineral swamp that softener salespeople describe.
This guide uses the actual numbers M.U.D. publishes every month, explains what those numbers mean for the pipes and appliances in your home, and gives you an honest answer on whether a softener is worth the money here.
How hard is Omaha's water, exactly?
Omaha's water comes from three treatment plants, and each one publishes a monthly analysis. Here is the total hardness reported for finished water in May 2026, measured as calcium carbonate:
- Platte West Plant — 139 mg/L, or about 8.1 grains per gallon
- Florence Plant — 153 mg/L, or about 8.9 grains per gallon
- Platte South Plant — 167 mg/L, or about 9.8 grains per gallon
The USGS classifies water between 121 and 180 mg/L as hard, and above 180 mg/L as very hard. All three Omaha plants land squarely in the hard band — not the extreme end, but well past the point where minerals start coming out of solution when you heat the water.
Worth knowing: M.U.D. already softens this water. The plants use a lime softening process that pulls a large share of the calcium out before the water ever reaches your street. What arrives at your tap is the treated result. The raw Missouri and Platte river water behind it is considerably harder.
Why your number moves around
You may see slightly different hardness figures quoted for Omaha, and they are not necessarily wrong. Hardness shifts month to month with river conditions, and the distribution system blends water from more than one plant depending on demand, main breaks and where you live in the metro. A home in West Omaha and Millard is usually drawing a different blend than one in north-central Omaha.
For practical purposes, plan around 8 to 10 grains per gallon. If you want your specific number, a $15 test strip kit from a hardware store is accurate enough for sizing a softener.
The part most articles leave out: Omaha's water is designed to leave a deposit
This is the detail that separates an informed decision from a sales pitch.
Every water utility manages something called the Langelier Saturation Index, a single number that predicts whether water will dissolve calcium carbonate off pipe walls or deposit it onto them. Negative means the water is corrosive and will eat at metal. Positive means the water is scale-forming and will lay down a thin mineral film.
In May 2026, M.U.D.'s finished water measured +0.81 at Florence, +1.27 at Platte West and +1.38 at Platte South, with a pH of about 9.0. Every one of those is comfortably positive.
That is on purpose. Omaha still has lead service lines in homes built before roughly 1930, and a thin, stable layer of calcium carbonate on the inside of a pipe is one of the cheapest and most reliable ways to keep lead and copper from leaching into drinking water. The utility is deliberately trading a little scale for corrosion protection, and it is the right trade for public health.
For you as a homeowner, it means two things. The scale you find on your fixtures is not a treatment failure. And your copper and galvanized pipe is being protected by the same chemistry that clouds your shower door.
What scale actually does inside your plumbing
Dissolved calcium and magnesium stay dissolved as long as the water stays cool and moving. Heat them, or slow them down at a restriction, and they precipitate out as limescale — a hard, chalky crust that does not rinse off.
Your water heater takes the worst of it
Every gallon that enters your water heater gets heated to 120 degrees or more, and a fraction of its minerals drops out and settles on the tank bottom. On a gas heater, that sediment sits directly between the burner and the water, so the burner has to fire longer and hotter to push heat through an insulating layer of rock. You will see the figure "hard water cuts water heater efficiency by up to 48 percent" quoted all over the internet. It comes from a 2009 Battelle study for the Water Quality Research Foundation — a legitimate piece of research, but one run at 26 grains per gallon. That is nearly three times Omaha's hardness. Expect a real but far smaller efficiency penalty here, and expect it to show up as a shorter tank life rather than a shocking gas bill.

Fixtures, valves and small openings
Scale collects fastest wherever the opening is small:
- Faucet aerators and showerheads. The classic symptom is one jet spraying at an angle. Unscrew the aerator, soak it in white vinegar for an hour, scrub with an old toothbrush and reinstall.
- Toilet fill valves. Mineral grit under the seal is a common cause of a toilet that runs intermittently or refills slowly.
- Dishwasher and washing machine inlet valves. These have fine screens that clog. A dishwasher that suddenly takes forever to fill is often a screened inlet, not a dying pump.
- Angle stops under sinks and toilets. A shutoff valve that has not been turned in fifteen years can seize with mineral deposits, and 2 a.m. with water running is the wrong time to find that out. Turn them once a year, and know how to shut off your water main before you need to.
What hard water does not do
Be skeptical of anyone who tells you scale is about to close off your supply lines. In a typical Omaha home with copper or PEX, the cold side accumulates very little. Even on the hot side, meaningful narrowing takes decades.
The arithmetic is worth seeing: on a half-inch line, a sixteenth of an inch of scale on each wall reduces the open diameter to three-eighths of an inch — a 25 percent loss of diameter and roughly 44 percent of the flow area. That is a lot of buildup for a residential hot line, and it happens over a very long time.
If your pressure is genuinely dropping, hardness is rarely the whole story. In older neighborhoods like Dundee, corroding galvanized steel pipe from the 1920s through the 1950s is the far more common culprit, and it fails from the inside out with rust rather than scale. Do you actually need a water softener?
Honest answer: at 8 to 10 grains, it is optional. Nobody in Omaha needs a softener for safety or code compliance, and plenty of homes here run for decades without one. It comes down to what bothers you and what you are replacing.
A softener earns its keep if you are on your second water heater in fifteen years, if you have a tankless unit (those are far more sensitive to scale than tanks), if spotting on glass and fixtures genuinely irritates you, or if you have a steam shower, humidifier or ice maker with tight passages.
A softener is harder to justify if your water heater is new, your fixtures look fine after a vinegar soak, and you would rather put $2,500 toward something else.
What it costs and what it will not fix
A whole-house salt-based system typically runs about $1,200 to $3,800 installed in 2026, plus roughly $40 to $120 a year in salt. The spread is mostly plumbing labor. Many newer homes in West Omaha, Millard and Papillion were built with a softener loop near the water heater, which makes installation straightforward. A 1930s house in Dundee or Benson often needs new lines run to reach a practical location, and that is where the cost climbs. Two things a softener will not fix. First, silica. The Platte South and Platte West plants report about 25 mg/L of silica, and an ion-exchange softener does not remove it. Silica contributes to the stubborn film on shower glass that survives every cleaner you throw at it. Second, taste and odor — softening swaps minerals, it does not filter. If taste is your concern, you want a filter, not a softener.
The sodium trade-off
Ion exchange works by swapping calcium and magnesium for sodium. The rule of thumb is roughly 8 mg of sodium added per liter for every grain of hardness removed. At 9 grains, softened water picks up around 70 mg/L of sodium.
That matters more here than in some cities, because the Florence Plant's finished water already carries 65 mg/L of sodium on its own. If anyone in the household is on a sodium-restricted diet, leave the kitchen cold tap unsoftened — a competent installer will plumb it that way — or use a potassium chloride salt substitute instead.
One more practical note: softened water tends to consume a water heater's sacrificial anode rod faster. If you install a softener, plan on checking the anode every couple of years rather than never. It is a $40 part that protects a $1,800 tank.
Maintenance that pays off either way
Whether or not you soften, a few habits keep scale from compounding:
- Flush your water heater annually. Fifteen minutes with a garden hose removes the sediment layer before it insulates the burner.
- Soak aerators and showerheads in white vinegar once or twice a year. Cheapest plumbing maintenance there is.
- Wipe down shower glass after use. Scale forms as water evaporates, not while it runs.
- Do not blame minerals for a slow drain. Kitchen and bath clogs are almost always grease and hair, and a professional drain cleaning will tell you which it is.
When to call a plumber
Call when the symptoms move past cosmetics: rumbling or popping from the water heater, hot water that runs out faster than it used to, a tank over eight years old, pressure that has dropped across the whole house, or rusty water on the hot side only. None of those are solved by scrubbing a showerhead.

The bottom line
Omaha's water is hard, at roughly 8 to 10 grains per gallon, and it is intentionally scale-forming to protect older service lines from corrosion. That combination is fine for your health and mildly hostile to your water heater. A softener is a reasonable comfort and longevity purchase, not a necessity — and annual flushing plus a vinegar soak handles most of what hardness throws at a typical Omaha home.
